Work at the Writing Center

The University Writing Center needs you!

There are two ways to gain valuable professional experience with the Writing Center: work as a paid writing consultant or enroll as an intern.

Work as a Writing Consultant. Applications are now being accepted for 2011-12.

Job Description: Writing Consultants meet one-on-one with student writers from across campus and provide critical, constructive feedback on writing projects.  Consultants work collaboratively with writers at any stage of a student's writing process, including idea generation, idea organization, finding and evaluating sources, and revising drafts.  Candidates must enjoy writing as well as assisting other writers.  Consultants are expected to be peer leaders interested in the personal and professional development of themselves and others.  Excellent word processing skills and familiarity with Ramsey Library's research resources required.

Number of Positions: 2 Federal Work Study Positions, 1-2 additional positions open to all students.

Application Requirements: Please submit a cover letter describing your interest and qualifications, a UNC Asheville Student Employment Application, and a 3-10 page writing sample to Deaver Traywick, Director, at traywick@unca.edu.

Application Deadline: Friday, September 2, 2011.

Be an intern. Internships are available for course credit.

Are you interested in working on a dynamic team with a campuswide reach? Do you care about making a positive impact in the lives of fellow students? Are you interested in learning about marketing and publicity? Do photocopying and data entry excite you? You have a home with us!

University Writing Center interns help us coordinate special projects, conduct research, run errands, offer administrative support, assist with event-planning, update our website, and more. Under the direction of Writing Center Director, Deaver Traywick, and Assistant Director, Joy Neaves, internships are arranged in coordination with your Academic Department or through the Literature and Language Department. Internships are awarded course credit (1, 2, or 3-hour available) and opportunities abound for tailoring work to support your specific interests, career, and academic goals.

In the next year, we plan to embark on a number of projects: assessing the work we do, establishing a writing-centered peer mentor program, creating a gallery of writing and a revolving student art show, hosting workshops, and developing training materials.

 Requirements:

  • Enthusiasm for the mission, values, and work of the Writing Center
  • Creative thinking about outreach and marketing
  • Leadership and teamwork abilities
  • Excellent communication skills
  • A passion for organization and attention to detail
