Writing is a tool that can change societal structures or reinforce them. Unwittingly, writing centers across the country have often functioned as gatekeepers of “correct” language to buttress institutional racism in higher education. It is time for this to end.
At UNCA’s Writing Center, we believe Black writing matters. We also believe Asian writing matters, Native American writing matters, Hispanic writing matters, queer writing matters, immigrant writing matters—our voices and our ability to communicate effectively matters.
Apply to work in the Writing Center, and join us as we break down the gates we have been charged with keeping, so we can ensure that all students have the tools they need to make the world a better place.
